Museums Should Honor the Everyday, Not Just the Extraordinary

The ordinary woman needs to be recognized just as much as the extraordinary woman. Yes, the extraordinary women have paved the way and inspired us, have gained many accomplishments, acts of service, and so much more. But we should not have to be the first lady, or the host of a talk show, to receive recognition.
Ariana Curtis spoke on Ted Talks about this exact idea. How the Smithsonian Museum contains dresses from the first ladies, first self made woman millionaire, and the iconic outfits of Oprah Winfrey. But not the everyday woman who are mothering, working, or even just going to the hair salon.
These extraordinary women in museums can give us an unrealistic image of how a woman should be. It is nearly impossible to live up to the standards of Oprah or Michelle Obama, but if we normalized more of the “everyday” woman, I believe more women would be confident and proud of their everyday accomplishments.
Every woman is strong and accomplished, regardless of if she is the first lady, or just simply a mother. As a society we should celebrate both ends of the spectrum, and everyone in between.
